Visitors look at the exhibition by German artist Juergen Wittdorf in the Biesdorf Palace in Berlin, Germany, on October 17, 2022. Co-author of a documentary on Forbidden Loves during WWII

While the Occupation has been discussed many times, the fate of the men and women who had intimate relationships with the opposite camp has received little attention. Yet many people experienced forbidden love during the war, often at great personal risk. This documentary looks back at this part of the intimate history of the Second World War, which has long remained taboo. Survivors and their descendants talk about these forbidden and shameful passions, known as “horizontal collaborations”. A universal testimony that questions the shadows of these stories and sheds new light on history’s worst conflict.
